How to Survive the Holidays in Style: Drink Bourbon!

John and I are so excited to have just launched our new Instagram Live series, “Cocktails by Design with Madcap Cottage,” with the kick-off theme, “How to Survive the Holidays in Style.” Sponsored by our friends at Four Roses Bourbon in Kentucky, the segment offers tips on everything from simple holiday entertaining and design tricks to favorite films, board games, and, of course, potent cocktail suggestions.

So when Grandma Myrtle drives you bonkers, head for your newly styled bar and make yourself an amazing Four Roses Bourbon-laced cocktail… The world will seem that much rosier–four times rosier, in fact. Trust us.

Here are three of our favorite bourbon-based cocktails that are both delicious and easy to make. Enjoy!

A fabulous Winter Spiced Old Fashioned cocktail.

Winter Spiced Old Fashioned

Ingredients

2 ounces Four Roses bourbon

.5 ounce winter spiced simple syrup*

2 dashes orange bitters

2 dashes aromatic bitters

Cinnamon stick

Instructions

Stir ingredients with ice. Strain into a rocks glass. Garnish with cinnamon stick.

*To make the winter spiced simple syrup. simmer 1:1 simple syrup with clove, cardamom, cinnamon, and nutmeg,

Lap up the warmth of a delectable Whiskey Sour.

Whiskey Sour

Ingredients

1.5 ounces Four Roses bourbon

1 teaspoon lemon juice

.5 teaspoon sugar

Orange slice

Maraschino cherry

Instructions

Add bourbon, lemon juice, and sugar to cocktail shaker. Shake with ice and strain into chilled rocks glass. Garnish with orange slice and maraschino cherry.

Live it up with a steaming Hot Toddy.

Hot Toddy

Ingredients

8 ounces hot water

1 tea bag

2 ounces Four Roses bourbon

1 tablespoon honey

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 lemon slice

Instructions

Pour hot water into mug and steep tea for two to three minutes. Remove tea bag and add honey, bourbon, and lemon juice. Stir. Garnish with lemon slice.
